YOU Are A Shining Star! (Excerpt from WOW! Women of Legacy – Chapter 1)
Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to
righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever. —Daniel 12:3

Esther, an orphan rose to the full potential of her name, in some languages translated as ‘star.’
Her fame propelled her to the highest position of any woman in her day. Even through biblical
history, her legacy and example reaches through the generations. Like Esther, regardless of our
status in life, we are called to be a shining star, leaving a legacy of a life well lived.

Years ago, for a season the Holy Spirit would pull a certain set of words up in my spirit. I would
wake up with the jingle in my mind and heart, “You are a shining star…” but couldn’t remember the
words. Fortunately, my husband Varn, a musician from childhood has a talent for remembering almost
all the songs he hears and have heard. That in itself is amazing to me. This song was no different.
You’re a shining star, no matter who you are— Shining bright to see what you can truly be—You’re a
shining star no matter who you are— Shining bright to see what you can truly be… Let me tell a
cautionary tale, so to speak. I’m not endorsing this group. For they were a secular music group.
Since, the Holy Spirit used it to prompt me in this teaching, I’m giving you a little background
and history, even though you probably don’t need it. (smile)

“Shining Star” is a 1975 song by Earth, Wind & Fire from their album That’s the Way of the World.
The song was written by Maurice White, Larry Dunn and Philip Bailey and produced by White. “Shining
Star” was Earth, Wind & Fire’s first major hit, hitting No. 1 on both the U.S. Hot 100 and R&B
charts.2 In 1975, Earth, Wind & Fire The Shining Star song hit the charts at U.S. Billboard Hot 100 at #1.
Shining Star” won Earth, Wind & Fire a Grammy for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.

The little snippet of the song served as a thread that I followed to the
word of God to see what he says about us being stars. It became a prophetic
riddle in my life. I hope it does for you too. Here are a couple scriptures that
say we are called to be shining stars in God’s kingdom:

  1. Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and
those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever.3
  2. And the teachers and those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of
the firmament, and those who turn many to righteousness (to uprightness and
right standing with God) [shall give forth light] like the stars forever and
    ever.4…
