Immutability and God’s Promises – Yesterday. Today. Forever.

Hebrews 6:13-20 …Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath…

Living in North Dallas at the time, we drove to one of our all-time favorite restaurants in South Dallas. It was famous for their chicken and it’s simple but special seasoning. We left our church meetings saying, “We had a taste for that chicken dinner—no one makes it quite like them. At church, we were ending a church wide healthy eating/Daniel’s Fast. It lasted the traditional 21 days but were given the option of choosing what we fasted. I’m telling you this because this restaurant didn’t make the healthy eating list, but we wanted it as a reward for successfully doing the fast.

So, as we left church, greeting and saying see you next week, we didn’t say anything about where we were going. I’m smiling now with fond memories of the times we would sneak off from the healthy folk and go get this favorite dinner. Anyway, we drove there in anticipation of our favorite hot, juicy, delicious meal. We got there and a sign was posted CLOSED AFTER 50 YEARS. We looked at each other, looked around to see if it was some joke or something, expecting someone to come out and say—just wanted to see who would notice. Needless to say, we were disappointed. O.k., it did re-open down the street, but it was never the same for us with new owners.

It started me to think about how things are sure to change—not always for the better either. There’s not much permanence around with anything anymore. Companies are looking for people that will stay with them for the long-haul. Careers aren’t lasting the 20,30,40-year tenures anymore. Faithful marriages lasting into the 30 and 40 years of a 75-year life span are rare.

Yet, there’s good news for us looking for something to pin everything down to in everyday life. The Scripture calls it the Anchor of Hope. The Anchor of Hope is Christ. He is the same yesterday, today and forever. He is the Alpha and Omega.

I previously studied the Psalms in depth, being in awe of how accurately the Psalmist (mostly King David) aligned with modern day experiences. Even so, I was happy to finally reach the end of that book, noting that it ended on a note of praise and God’s participation with us in our trials and troubles we go through. He even says at one point, God says, I was afflicted in your affliction and I’m a very present help in times of trouble.

This quarter, my special read and study has been in the book of Hebrews. It’s a thirteen-chapter book, that is favored by many for its depiction of the High Priest Melchizedek and comparison with Jesus as our High Priest. It’s so rich with good sound doctrine and principles for us to live by. Here are a few highlights I’ve discovered so far.

Immutability

The Apostle Paul talks about the certainty (immutability) of God’s promises, specifically to Abraham the father of faith. Webster defines Immutability as unchanging over time or unable to be changed. “an immutable fact” Similar words: unchangeable, fixed, set, rigid, inflexible, unyielding, unbending

Hebrew 6: Verse 13-20 For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he swore by himself. Saying, surely blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee. And so, after patiently enduring, he obtained the promise. And then ‘Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath. That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us: which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which entered into that within the veil; whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.

For us the modern day believer, we can know that God’s view toward us through Christ is unchanging. We are co-heirs with Christ of the blessing and benefits of God promises. They are always yes and amen to those who believe. So to get started building your faith about Father God’s immutability in your life, remember it’s an immutable fact that in blessing, He will bless you and in multiplying he will multiply you. He swore to Abraham by Himself (for he had nothing else higher to sware by) We are co-heirs of the promise through Christ. He is our anchor of hope–something we can be sure of in this world and the one to come.
