The Blessing And The Prayer of Jabez

How To Pray Like Jabez Did

Text: The prayer of Jabez, found in 1 Chronicles 4:10, is: “Oh, that you would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory! Let Your hand be with me, and keep me from harm, so that I will be free from pain.”

REVIEW: We have been continuing on the Blessing journey. Our last Wednesdays In The Word, we covered ‘The Blessing, Balaam & His Donkey That Talked’

Jabez, a Hebrew name means “sorrowful” or “borne in pain,” referencing a difficult birth in the Bible. His mother named him this because his birth was painful. Despite the challenging start, Jabez is known for his powerful prayer and God’s response, highlighting that even from difficult beginnings, great blessings can come.

Jabez the man was only mentioned three times in the whole Bible. But his prayer and God’s response has become one of the most popular prayers prayed. The 2 Chronicles 4:9-10 is the passage we are exploring today.

The Prayer of Jabez (I read the book years ago, The Prayer of Jabez: Breaking Through to the Blessed Life Book by Bruce Wilkinson. Though I benefited from his teaching, this is not a review. This is a short excerpt teaching from my experience as a part of the teaching series ‘The Blessing An Impartation)

9Now Jabez was more honorable than his brothers. His mother had named him Jabez, saying, “Because I bore him in pain.” 10And Jabez called out to the God of Israel, “If only You would bless me and enlarge my territory! May Your hand be with me and keep me from harm, so that I will be free from pain.” And God granted the request of Jabez.…

It’s a prayer of blessing, expansion, divine guidance, and protection from suffering.

Here’s what we can pattern in our own prayers.

First Jabez recognized his circumstances were not most favorable for his life. His birth circumstances were filled with pain and his life was headed that direction as well. Now, let’s examine the pattern.

  1. He called out to God.
  2. He asked with a short petition.
  3. Bless me and enlarge my territory.
  4. May your hand be with me and keep me from harm.

God’s Part: He granted the request of Jabez. (So we thank him for answering our prayer.)

  1. Call out to God, Ask with short request or petition, bless me and enlarge my territory, may your hand be with me, keep me from evil, thank you for granting my request.

In summary, we discover another short pattern for powerful prayer. Apply it in faith to your next prayer need or desire for blessing. Let us know how it goes. Remember Father God is no respecter of persons. He did it for Jabez and thousands of others, he will certainly do it for you. Pray and believe.

Prayer Example:
Father God, Bless me indeed! May your hand be with me and upon me. Enlarge my territory. Keep me from all evil, that I may not cause harm. Thank you for granting my request. In Jesus name, I pray.
